Subconsciously we are wired that the cold is bad for us and it makes us sick. We now know the opposite is true.

Understanding the positive impact cold immersion is having on the body and mind helps with committing to this practice. Heres a few benefits to prepare you for this life altering tool:


Exposure to cold temperatures leads to increased levels of adiponectin, a protein that increases fat burning. It also increases brown fat which stores at the top of our spine, we all have stores of brown fat tissue and it reduces as we get older. Unlike white fat, brown fat is active in burning calories and using energy. In simple terms the brown fat created from cold exposure burns the fat we don’t want for up to 6 days!


Exposure to cold temperatures raises adiponectin, this protein also combats inflammation, helping your sore and achy joints, pains, and sickness. (Nearly all illness and dis-ease can be linked back to inflammation)


Exposure to cold is putting the body in a controlled but stressful environment, creating a hormetic response on the body whilst also improving vagal tone. Hormesis is when your body strengthens and adapts to a stressful environment. In a practical sense the things that normally stress you out will not phase you because your threshold for stress will be much greater.


When we choose to get in an environment that we don’t want to be in we are telling our ego mind we are in control, we are not a slave to our urges and cravings. Consciously putting our mind under pressure and seeing how we show up, asking how do I show up in a stressful environment? For many this is the most powerful part of immersing myself in the cold.


The best tool we have in this environment like all stressful environments is the breath. A 4 count in the nose and an 8 count out will help settle the shock response and calm the nervous system.

Your body can 100% do a 2-3 minute ice bath it’s just a matter of overcoming your mind.
